Homework Tips

An explanation of what is to be given for homework is normally given to parents at the beginning of each session.

In the Early Stages homework is mainly language based with the emphasis on reading.  As your child progresses through school homework will become more varied, with work set in most curricular areas but with a weighting towards reading, English language and mathematics.

Within school, teachers use a combination of approaches with pupils class work, group work and individual work.

Homework is given to practice, develop or complete work started in school.  It is important that you take an interest in what your child is doing and it would be of great benefit if you could check what homework has been set, when it is due to be handed in and that it has been done satisfactorily.

Homework should not become a point of conflict between you and your child.  If a child has genuine difficulty in completing homework, because of lack of understanding, then it is necessary that the class teacher should be aware of this.  A note from you in the homework jotter explaining the difficulty will alert the teacher to the problem, and further explanation can be given at school.

It is not school policy to supply work to pupils who are taking a holiday during term time.  If a pupil misses class work through illness or a holiday, class teachers will give pupils the necessary teaching input and assist the pupil in catching up once they have returned to school.  Additional work may also be sent home during that period.

These are some helpful hints to use at the appropriate level.

bulletEncourage your child to write his/her name correctly - starting with capital letter then continue in lower case.
bulletEncourage your child to initially recognize his/her surname and later write it.
bulletAsk your child to write letters to family/friends thanking them for gifts.  Check for the correct use of capital letter and full stops.
bulletEncourage your child to write his/her own address.
bulletWriting diaries on holidays can provide reminders and can be used to help punctuation i.e. capital letters in place names etc.
bulletLater captions can be written for photographs.
bulletAlways provide a quiet area with no distractions for homework completion.
bulletAsk your child to explain the homework task to you.
bulletHelp your child by modelling how to look up information or find a word in a dictionary rather than giving the answer to him.
bulletDon't be tempted to teach your child the methods you used in school.
bulletDiscourage your child from copying facts verbatim.  Talk about the information and pick out the key facts and help your child to write notes.
bulletTry to check homework with your child immediately he/she has completed it.
bulletIf you are concerned about your child's attempts or progress make an appointment with the school.
bulletDon't make homework become a chore.  Enjoy the time spent together.
